Reactive Dog
Walk and Train

At Dirty Paws Dog Training, we approach reactivity with empathy, patience, and respect for the dog in front of us. There is no judgment here—only understanding, support, and a commitment to helping both you and your dog succeed.

Using ethical, science-based methods in real-world environments, we focus on reducing leash reactivity while building engagement, impulse control, and confidence around dogs, people, and environmental triggers. This program helps reactive dogs feel safer and calmer on walks, while empowering owners through education, transparency, and lasting results.

Program Overview

The Reactive Dog Walk & Train Program combines structured, carefully managed walks with professional behaviour training in real-life environments. Each session is thoughtfully planned to reduce stress, build coping skills, and improve your dog’s ability to navigate triggers calmly.

Rather than suppressing behaviour, we focus on understanding why your dog is reacting and teaching them alternative, healthier responses.

Training may include work on:

  • Loose-leash walking with reduced tension and stress

  • Engagement and focus around triggers

  • Impulse control and emotional regulation

  • Calm observation of people, dogs, and environmental stimuli

  • Safe distance work and gradual exposure

  • Desensitization to common triggers such as dogs, people, traffic, bikes, and noise

All training is conducted at your dog’s pace, with careful attention to thresholds and stress signals.

Who is this program for

This program is ideal for dogs who:

  • Bark, lunge, growl, freeze, or shut down on walks

  • React to other dogs, people, vehicles, or environmental stimuli

  • Struggle to stay focused or calm outdoors

  • Experience anxiety, frustration, or overstimulation

  • Benefit from structured, predictable outings

  • Need professional, one-on-one guidance in real-world settings

This program is also well-suited for owners who want compassionate support, clear explanations, and a collaborative training relationship.

What Each Session Includes

60-Minute Structured Walk

A carefully planned walk that prioritizes safety, emotional regulation, and controlled exposure. Routes, pacing, and distance from triggers are intentionally chosen to support your dog’s success.

Skill-Focused Behaviour Training

Short, purposeful training moments woven throughout the walk to build focus, calm responses, and alternative behaviours using balanced training methods.

Trigger Management & Confidence Building

Gradual, controlled exposure to triggers at a level your dog can handle—helping them build confidence and resilience without overwhelm.

Individualized Training Goals

Each session is customized based on your dog’s specific triggers, behaviour patterns, and progress, ensuring consistency with your overall training plan.

Post-Session Report & Owner Education

After every session, you’ll receive a detailed update via message or video that includes:

  • Triggers encountered and how they were handled

  • Skills practiced and progress observed

  • Clear, practical guidance to support your dog at home and on your own walks

We believe owner education is essential for lasting change.

Progress Looks Different for Reactive Dogs

Reactivity doesn’t disappear overnight, and meaningful progress isn’t measured by perfection. For reactive dogs, success often looks like:

  • Recovering more quickly after seeing a trigger

  • Choosing to disengage rather than react

  • Staying under threshold for longer periods

  • Feeling calmer, more confident, and more connected to their handler

These small, steady changes matter. They’re signs your dog is learning to feel safe, understood, and capable—and they’re the foundation for lasting improvement.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Reactive dogs need consistency, structure, and compassionate guidance—but owners need support too. Our goal isn’t just to improve your dog’s behaviour; it’s to help you feel confident, informed, and empowered.

Through clear communication, education, and honest feedback, Dirty Paws Dog Training works alongside you as a true partner in your dog’s training journey. Together, we focus on realistic goals, ethical methods, and progress that improves quality of life for both ends of the leash.

You’re Not Failing Your Dog

Living with a reactive dog can feel isolating, frustrating, and emotionally exhausting. Many owners worry they’ve “done something wrong” or that their dog is being difficult on purpose. The truth is, reactivity isn’t a failure—it’s communication.

Reactive behaviour often comes from fear, frustration, overwhelm, or a lack of coping skills in busy environments. Your dog isn’t trying to give you a hard time—they’re having a hard time.

Important Program Notes

  • This program is not a quick fix and does not rely on punishment or suppression.

  • Progress is measured through improved emotional regulation, confidence, and recovery—not just the absence of reactions.

  • Reactive dogs often benefit most from ongoing sessions and owner participation for best results.
